The Font Burner Wordpress Plugin

I am really excited to be able to announce a new Font Burner tool called Font Burner Control Panel, a Wordpress Plugin that will make it extremely easy to add Font Burner Fonts to any Wordpress powered website. The great thing about this plugin is that it allows you to change the color and size of your headlines. This overcomes the limitation of Font Burner which until now has limited you to black, white, and gray headlines and the default sizes. Click on the thumbnail on the right to see what the control panel looks like.

The plugin is a free download that you can find in the Wordpress plugin directory. This is my first plugin, so if you have any feedback, please send me your comments and suggestions for improvement. Leave comments on this post, or email me. Thanks!

How to Change the Default Font Color

By default Font Burner will deliver all fonts in Black. Changing the font color is a simple matter of changing your code slightly. If you look at your Font Burner code you will see this line:

<script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://www.fontburner.com/js/black/addwbitmap09.php”></script>

Notice the part that says “black.” This is the part of the code that controls your font color. By changing this word you can change the color of all your fonts! However, as of right now, the only other color options are white and gray. To use these colors replace “black” with either “gray” or “white.” We plan on adding a rainbow of color options in the near future so please be patient. If you are really itching to get a color added to our limited spectrum, send us some mail and mention your favorite color!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change anything besides the headlines?
Yes, but it takes a little more work on your part. To change the font on something other than a headline you need to wrap the text in a “class” tag. For example, if you are want to change some text to the font, “Alba Super” you would do something like this:

<div class=”alba_super”>Your text here</div>

Depending on your stylesheet is set up, you may have to play with this method a bit to get it working.

Isn’t Font Burner Just a watered down version of sIFR
Font Burner is made possible by sIFR. If you have the ability to customize sIFR on your own you probably should. The advantage of using Font Burner instead of tackling sIFR on your own is simplicity. You don’t have to learn how sIFR works. You don’t have to customize javascript files or tweak stylsheets. You don’t have to own Flash. You don’t have to own fonts. You don’t have to convert fonts to sIFR. It isn’t for everyone, but it is perfect for some. Does that make Font Burner watered down? You can decide.

Do my headlines have to align left?
Yes. If you want center aligned, right aligned, or justified headlines send us a note requesting that feature. As of right now we plan on keeping our headlines left aligned.

Can I change the colors of the fonts?
Yes. By default Font Burner will deliver all fonts in black, but there are a limited number of colors available besides black. Currently, you can use black, gray, or white. We will be adding more color options in the near future. To learn how to change your font color read these instructions.

Is this legal?
Yes. All fonts available through Font Burner are freely available copyright free fonts. For more legal explanation and discussion click here.

How much does it cost?
Font Burner is absolutely free! If you use Font Burner you can help us out in two ways. First, add a link to us on your website. Second, take a look at the advertisements featured on our site. By visiting our sponsors websites you help us keep the wheels of Font Burner turning.

Will my site validate if I use Font Burner?
Yes! Font Burner uses valid XHTML and adheres to web standards.

Will search engines be able to “see” my headlines if I use Font Burner?
Yes. Font Burner doesn’t touch your markup, so your webpages will be completely visible to search engines.

What happens if the Font Burner website goes down?
If for some reason the Font Burner site goes down your fonts will default to the fonts specified in your site’s stylesheet. There should never be a time where your headlines would disappear.

Can I use fonts not available through Font Burner?
If there is a font that you are dying to use on your site that isn’t available on Font Burner please send us an email. We are constantly looking for fonts to add to our site. If you just can’t wait for us to add your favorite font, you can take a look at sIFR (that’s what makes Font Burner work) and learn to do it yourself.

Do you host copyright protected fonts?
No. Commercial fonts (the one’s you have to buy!) usually try to restrict the free distribution of sIFR fonts. Whether this is within their legal rights is up for debate, but Font Burner tries to honor the wishes of font owners. For that reason Font Burner will not host sIFR files of commercial fonts.

Other Questions?
If you have a question that isn’t covered on this page, please send us an email and we will try to help you out!

About Font Burner

Font Burner is a website enhancement tool that makes it easy for you to add new fonts to your website. Websites are basically limited to the default fonts that come with all computers. That’s because a user must have the fonts installed on their computer in order to have it show up in their browser. Font Burner bypasses this limitation with our archive of fonts that work universally in all browsers and on all computers. By adding a simple block of code to your webpages you can transform your headlines from boring system fonts to any of the quality fonts found here at Font Burner! There is nothing to install, and best of all, it’s free!

So how does it work?
As you can see from our instructions page, it is really easy. After you find the font that you would like to use, Font Burner gives you a chunk of code that you will insert into the head of your webpage. Provided you don’t have any stylesheet conflicts, the new font will show up on your site immediately. You can read about the limitations and some trouble-shooting suggestions on our FAQ page.

No, really. How does it work?
Font Burner uses a technology called Scalable Inman Flash Replacement (sIFR) to change the fonts in the headlines of your site. Basically it hides the headline and puts a Flash file in their place. The Flash file is able to render the font without breaking the usability of your site. SIFR is an open source project available to one and all through novemberborn.net. If you are looking for flexibility beyond what Font Burner is offering we encourage you to dig into sIFR so you can take advantage of the full capabilities it has to offer.

Introducing the Font Burner Team

I have a confession to make. The team behind Font Burner is pretty small. It really isn’t even a team at all. It was created by me (Adrian Hanft) and as of right now I am the whole team. It feels awkward saying “we” and “us” all the time, but I don’t want this to be a one man show. If you are interested in joining the team, I could use your help.
